Individuals Discontinuing Slimming Injections Put On Weight Four Times Faster Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

New research indicates that individuals who discontinue new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds far faster than those who halt conventional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a major health publication shows that while overweight people frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users buying these drugs need to be aware of the risk of fast weight regain when the treatment is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery implies a reversion to starting weight in about 18 months.

Comparing Therapies

The study, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

The team emphasize that people who lose weight through diet and exercise usually see a less rapid weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Quick Rebound

Doctors propose the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the heightened rebound.

These medications imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Condition?

The NHS recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts contend that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy is often long-term.

This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "underscore the long-term nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Experiences

People who have come off the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"I experienced something that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled one woman.

This challenge is exacerbated if users have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Growing Use

Recent estimates indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is higher among females than men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts stress that while these medications are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and long-term success likely depends on combined lifestyle management.
